Decorative Details: How I Create Images That Highlight a Designer’s Style

In an interior crafted by an architect or interior designer, every detail carries intention.

Lines, materials, textures, and objects all contribute to the identity of the space. My role as a photographer is to reveal these elements with precision while preserving the coherence of the overall design.

Understanding the Designer’s Intent

Before I start shooting, I take time to observe the space and understand the artistic direction. I look at the materials, the color palette, the symmetry, and the overall style—minimalist, warm, refined, brutalist…

I also identify the designer’s signature elements: a custom handle, a unique stitching detail, a recurring pattern, a specific texture, or a bespoke light fixture. These are key markers of their identity, and I integrate them into my photographic approach.

Choosing the Right Details

Every interior contains decorative elements that reveal its character. Some are subtle, others more expressive. I select the details that truly define the designer’s vision: materials, shapes, curated objects, or the way light interacts with surfaces.

I distinguish what is decorative, what structures the space, and what expresses the essence of the design. This hierarchy allows me to create images that reflect the project’s DNA with accuracy.

Creating Images That Tell a Story

A detail makes sense only when connected to its environment. I compose each image to preserve this context, using leading lines, depth, and layering to build elegant and readable photographs.

Each frame has a purpose: showcasing a material, revealing an intention, creating an atmosphere, or guiding the viewer’s eye. My goal is to produce aesthetic yet informative images that support the designer’s communication.

Working With Light to Enhance Materials

Textures play a major role in interior design. I work primarily with natural light to respect the palette and choices of the designer while maintaining softness, nuance, and chromatic coherence.

Shadows help reveal depth and volume, but I control them so they never overpower the material. Wood, linen, stone, metal, velvet—each reacts differently to light, and I adapt my technique to reveal them faithfully.

Ensuring a Cohesive Series

A strong interior photography project relies on a consistent visual narrative. I build a rhythm between wide shots, mid-shots, and details while maintaining a visual thread aligned with the designer’s style.

I adjust my color grading to stay true to the project’s palette and ensure coherence across the entire series, whether it is used on a website, portfolio, or professional publication.
